The Briefing

Major Mia StormChaser assessed the pilots as they came into the briefing room. For once she had actually turned up early – that officer training course her CO had persuaded Mia to take part in must be rubbing off somewhere. That and she hadn’t gone to the officer’s bar last night but had headed back to her bunk early, and alone. Lately, she had realised that life on the front line was making her more reflective, more aware of the terrible risks that all her colleagues ran each day.

So many new faces thought Mia – it was a sobering thought to think that despite the Rebel Squadrons successes in the Subterrel Sector so far, there was still a constant trickle of casualties – enough to remind her that the fight wasn’t out of the Imperial remnant yet, not by a long way, and there was still everything to play for.

Still, luckily a few old faces turned up and were a welcome sight. Mia nodded to both Jarik Nyine and his CO Colonel Dolaree as they came into the briefing room, still laughing about some exploit at the bar last night no doubt. It was good to know that the pilot’s Red Dragon Squadron were on board for this mission – Mia knew of no other flyboy’s she’d rather have protecting her six out there, other than her own Dagger Squadron of course. Still scanning the room, Mia quickly waved to Hermus Dogan as well. For the first time since sitting down though, Mia started to get that familiar knot of anxiety which preceded all mission briefings. Seeing Dogan and Dolaree here meant that this was going to be far from a routine mission, and that meant only one thing to Mia – that next time she would be sitting here, there would be even more new faces in the crowd.

That is, if she made it make at all. Her feeling of unease only increased when she saw who was leading the briefing, Admiral Pasiechnyk. Mia had spoken to the Admiral a couple of times, mostly in conducting her duties as second officer of Dagger Squadron, but had heard some impressive stories about Pasiechnyk’ flying expertise which was coupled with a legendary capacity to come through some truly dire situations which just some missing paintwork to his B-Wing. Still only his mid-twenties, that Admiral Pasiechnyk was taking the time to lead this briefing meant that the High Command had something special for them this time around.

After calling all the gathered pilots to attention, the Admiral started to outline the mission. It appeared that an abandoned Imperial outpost had now been discovered and the Rebel Squadrons were going to sending in a dedicated strike force to capture it and see what information this outpost yielded. Mia relaxed somewhat when she noted that despite the apparently ‘abandoned’ nature of the outpost, the Admiral wasn’t taking any chances and several squadrons of starfighter’s had been assigned to deal with any surprises that the imperials may have left behind. Despite his reputation of crazy flying, it was nice to know that Admiral Pasiechnyk wasn’t going to be taking any chances if he could help it with the lives of his pilots.

Watching the briefing room clear as the Admiral wished everybody luck in the coming mission, Mia just hoped she saw all of these faces back again for their next briefing, and that everybody made it back safely.
